This book opens with a man throwing himself in front of a train to commit suicide (that is what they call “one under”). There is no doubt it was a suicide, so there does not appear to be any crime to investigate. Then a young girl’s body is discovered some distance away from Slider’s usual area, but the young girl is from his area. That appears to be a hit and run accident, but the pathologist raises questions. Slider can not resist investigating further, and higher-ups try to shut the investigation down. That just makes him more determined. These are very interesting police procedural mysteries. It is fascinating to see how these (British) police proceed. And I love Slider’s team of quirky individuals. I also enjoy reading about his family. Slider’s boss Porson uses many malapropisms. A prior reader of my library book “corrected” some of them with a red pencil, which was annoying. He or she did not get the joke. This was not my favorite book in this series, but I love this series.
