Wonderful and deeply insightful novel, from an astute observer of human nature. *The Earth Hums in B Flat* takes place in the late 1950’s or early 1960’s and is partly about the secrets families have in a small Welsh village – or *think* they have. Most people guess the truth but tacitly agree to ignore it. The story is told from the point of view of a young girl who wants to be a girl detective to solve the disappearance of a neighbor. She doesn’t understand that instead of solving a mystery, she is exposing the hidden secrets of many people, including her own family. She thinks she is the lead in a girl detective story without appreciating the real lives around her. There is some humor and the slightest touch of fantasy, which might be real or might be just in the imagination of the main character. The writing is excellent with a detail of character that I really appreciate. A book to get lost in.
