I've seen this before but forgot about it. Lately I got on a Gary Sinise kick, so I thought to pick it up again. What can I say? A number of good actors in a film I'm sure they did their best in but the film itself doesn't do them justice. The film doesn't seem to know which film it is. Is it a hard sci-fi piece? Is it a disaster film? Some 2001? Dips into Dune? There are elements to the story that could work well if only it could lose the extra stories/ideas/writers/directors/writer-directors and the actual director for a director who knows how to direct sci-fi ... this seems to be directed by a NASA nerd who needs to get out more.
Wait, this isn't "Red Planet?" What's the difference? I think those movies both came out around the same time. "Mars" is a pretty boring sci-fi with a good cast (mostly wasted) and some decent fx. It draws heavily on classics like "2001," "Close Encounters," and "Alien." Tim Robbins, Don Cheadle, Connie Nielsen, and Gary Sinise star. Brian De Palma (totally out of his element) directs.
Average special effects but great acting. The ending is kind of cheesy.
