Joe Pickett - a depressed wimp? Crazy talk. In Joe Pickett and his family, C.J. Box has created men and women of character and integrity in the wild lands Wyoming. Joe is a Game Warden whose strong moral code is born out in his work and his devotion to his family. No superheroes here, just real people in situations that will educate and entertain. This is the first book in the Joe Pickett series - read and enjoy!

Joe Pickett is the new, by-the-books game warden in Twelve Sleep, Wyoming.

Easy to read and interesting. I found myself skimming some of the descriptive paragraphs, I just couldn't get into the authors details. I felt sorry for the hero, the situation he was living in and the way he was treated by his coworkers and mother-in law. The mystery and the situation was interesting. I really liked how the author acknowledge the two sides of the endangered species and hunting issues. I will read the next in the series

Blerg. This was so disappointing that I couldn't even get through to Chapter 3. I have abandoned it. And will be returning this book. Unfortunately, Joe Pickett is just too depressing as a character. Oh well.

Read it because of the great reviews here. Very disappointed. Ineffectual, wimp intimidated by the people he is supposed to be stopping from poaching, by his mother-in-law, and other law enforcement officers. He spends most of his time feeling inadequate as a husband, provider, and father. This is nothing like Johnson's Walt Longmire series it has been compared to because there is nothing funny, the other characters are flat, and even the dog isn't interesting. I applaud the effort, but I'm sick of characters who spend their lives feeling put upon and depressed.

Loved it. Let my household duties go as I sat with this book in my hand and my cup of coffee by my elbow. It really held your attention!

Great read. Joe Pickett is a very likeable character, likewise his daughter Sheridan. Loved the book and looking forward to reading more of his novels.

Open Season is the first of the Joe Pickett series featuring the murder solving game warden. There’s a good mystery that revolves around an endangered species. Passages of the book are very simply written almost as though they were intended for young adults. Box does telegraph who the bad guys are fairly early on. Probably he was just learning his craft at the time. However, I found this one essential to understand Pickett’s family situation and it was a pretty solid story at that. If you have read others in this series and enjoyed them then Open Season is a must.

Open Season is the first book in the C.J. Box’s series about Wyoming Game Warden Joe Pickett. Set in the fictional country of Twelve Sleep, Joe is the newly appointed Game Warden, replacing his mentor Vern Dunnegan in the position. Joe is a straight up family man, loving his wife, his two daughters, and his job.

Unfortunately he finds himself in the middle of an investigation involving three dead outfitters, and although someone is quickly charged with the crime, Joe is far from satisfied. Digging deeper seems to be an unpopular choice both with the locals and his federal department, and the more attention Joe gives this case, the more trouble he is bringing down upon himself and his family.

This is an excellent introduction to what looks to be a great series. Joe Pickett is far from a super man, but he is an admirable, honest person trying to do the right thing. The setting, although fictional is all to easy to pinpoint on a map, snuggled in against the scenic Big Horn Mountains of Wyoming. The last third of this book really keep me on the edge of my seat, and jumped this book up another notch in my appreciation. Intelligent with good-pacing and an excellent sense of place, Open Season will soon be followed by book number two.

This writer really paints a picture of the west and the outdoor culture through a very sympathetic character. And luckily for us, he is prolific. Start with this one and work your way to newestg.

This was one of those books that I read only because it was recommended to me. The thought of a "game warden" generating any kind of suspense seemed unlikely to me....but, thankfully I listened to my friend and gave this one a shot. I LOVED this book. Joe Pickett is such a "real" character that I was instantly enthralled. It is such a fresh read, new concept. Loved it.
